Sealants Offer Extra Protection for Your Child’s Teeth

Brushing is essential, but sometimes it’s not enough — especially in the small grooves and pits of back teeth that are hard to reach. These areas can trap food and bacteria, increasing the risk of tooth decay.

Protecting Young Smiles with Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that bond to the deep grooves of the chewing surfaces, typically on the back teeth. Once applied, these grooves become smoother and less likely to trap plaque, making brushing more effective and reducing the risk of cavities.
Sealants are most commonly applied once a child’s permanent teeth have fully erupted, serving as a preventive step against tooth decay. While they are usually used on permanent teeth, your dentist may also recommend sealants for baby teeth, depending on your child’s individual needs.
Sealants can last anywhere from three to five years, and in some cases, well into adulthood. Since they only protect the tooth while fully intact, it’s important to have them checked regularly. If a sealant comes off, contact your dentist to schedule a quick reapplication and keep that protection in place.
